Four Men Arrested Over Migrant Smuggling Ring Using Lorries
Four men have been arrested in a National Crime Agency (NCA) crackdown on a gang smuggling migrants into the UK hidden in lorries.
Migrants Found in Lorry Load Near Ghent
On Thursday 5 March, Belgian police discovered 10 migrants—two adults and eight juveniles—hidden in a lorry loaded with tyres near Ghent. The group is believed to be from South East Asia.
The operation came after a tip-off from the NCA, leading Belgian authorities to arrest the lorry driver, a 64-year-old man from glasgow/" title="Glasgow" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Glasgow.
Three More Arrested in UK and Northern Ireland
Following the initial arrest, the NCA swooped on three more suspects suspected of facilitating illegal immigration. Two Irish nationals, aged 39 and 48, were arrested in Dover.
A third man, 30, was detained in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, on Friday 6 March. All three remain in custody for questioning.
Searches Yield Suspected Firearms in Kent
Investigators have also searched properties in Northern Ireland and Kent. At a Kent address, two suspected firearms were seized as part of the ongoing probe.
