Don’t Delay, File Your Tax Return Before Christmas!

With Christmas just around the corner, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging Self Assessment taxpayers to get their tax returns done early. Last year, over 2,800 filed their returns on Christmas Day itself – but why leave it to the last minute? Finish your 2021-22 tax return before January 1 and enjoy the festive season stress-free!

Beat the January 31 Deadline – Avoid Hefty Penalties

Self Assessment customers must submit their tax returns and pay any owed tax by 31 January 2023 to dodge fines. Even better, if you file before 30 December, you could pay your tax through your PAYE code, spreading the cost over the year.

Filing early also gives you ample time to explore payment options on GOV.UK. Don’t forget to add your bank details so HMRC can refund you swiftly if you’ve overpaid.

Easy Online Filing – Use the HMRC App or Your Personal Tax Account

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, advises,

“Plan your Self Assessment like you plan Christmas – get organised early, tick off your to-do list, and avoid the last-minute chaos. Just search ‘self assessment’ on GOV.UK to get started.”

The fastest way to file is online using your Personal Tax Account, where you can start your return, save progress, and come back anytime before submitting. Plus, HMRC’s free app lets you access your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), make payments, and check your National Insurance number and employment history with ease.

Beware of Scams This Tax Season

  • HMRC warns of fraudsters using Self Assessment to trick customers.
  • Never share your HMRC login details – scammers use these to steal or fake claims.

Get ahead this Christmas – file early, pay smart, and stay safe from scams!
