Travellers Spark Chaos on A33 with Illegal Horse Races
Hampshire police were forced to shut the A33 for a second day running after hundreds of travellers descended on the busy road between Larkwhistle Farm Road and Woodmancott junction. The crowd gathered for wild horse and trap races, with big-money bets flying left and right.
Road Blocked by 4x4s and Spectators
Officers had no choice but to close the busy stretch as multiple 4x4s surrounded the racing horses and traps. Passengers dangled out of vehicles while hundreds of spectators lined the roadside, turning the highway into a makeshift racecourse.
Injured ‘Winning’ Horse and Police Crackdown
Video footage from Saturday shows bets placed on the fastest horse and rider. The ‘winning’ horse suffered a nasty injury, needing nine stitches after the race. Police took a tactical approach to avoid accidents on the highway and alerted RSPCA officials to the animal welfare concerns.
- Authorities seized three vehicles.
- One person arrested for drug driving at the unauthorised event.
- Investigations and enforcement are ongoing.
Local MP and Traveller Community Clash Over Police Response
MP Steve Brine has voiced serious concerns to Hampshire Police Chief Constable over the illegal event and what he sees as a lack of police intervention. Meanwhile, a traveller community spokesperson fired back, accusing authorities of “racist” treatment against travellers.
Hampshire police said:
“We have increased our patrols in the area. Officers will engage with those in attendance and take enforcement action where necessary and proportionate. We will deal with any offences and gather evidence to follow up on incidents not immediately resolved.”
