Essex Police Step Up Patrols to Crack Down on Harlow Violence

Chief Inspector Austin, who has served with Essex Police since 2006, revealed a ramp-up in officers at Harlow’s trouble hotspots. The move comes after clear analysis showing most violent incidents happen around the town centre.

Operation Shopper Targets Anti-Social Behaviour

“Violence is mainly centred in the town centre, so we’re deploying more officers there to make Harlow safer,” Ch Insp Austin said. His team is running Operation Shopper, an initiative tackling anti-social behaviour head-on.

Already, officers have seized over 100 illegal e-scooters and confiscated alcohol under Harlow’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which bans public drinking and prohibits private e-scooters in public areas.

Community Voices Heard, Action Taken

Residents, local businesses, and visitors have long complained about feeling intimidated by rowdy behaviour in the town centre. Austin stressed the importance of listening to their concerns:

“We’re focusing on complaints about repeated anti-social behaviour and showing results through our ‘You Said, We Did’ updates,” he said. “We’re visible, accessible, and hosting regular events for the public to talk to us. I’m here to listen.”

Bright Future Ahead for Harlow

Ch Insp Austin, proud to serve the town, is optimistic about Harlow’s future. He highlighted the community spirit and upcoming regeneration projects set to boost the town.

“Harlow is a diverse town with a strong sense of community. The future’s looking bright with a lot of regeneration on the way. We’re working harder than ever to make it safer — a great place to live and work.”
