Manhunt Underway After Deputy Shot Dead in Harris County
Harris County deputies are on the hunt for 44-year-old Ronnie Palmer in connection with the fatal shooting of Deputy Fernando Esqueda, 28, late Wednesday night. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the grim news, revealing Palmer is the prime suspect in the deadly incident.
Suspect Linked to Earlier Assault
Palmer also faces an aggravated assault charge related to a violent episode earlier on the same day, at a Little Caesars on Wallisville Road. Witnesses say Palmer attacked an employee after a dispute over a wrong order — pistol-whipping the worker before fleeing the scene.
Deputies used surveillance cameras to track Palmer’s vehicle, but the situation soon spiralled deadly.
Deputy Ambushed While Investigating
Deputy Esqueda returned to the pizzeria alone and spotted Palmer’s car. During a phone call with fellow officers, Esqueda reported seeing the vehicle but not the suspect. Then, in a shocking ambush, he was shot multiple times inside his car.
Despite a swift emergency response, the five-year veteran deputy died at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital.
“None of us are ever prepared for such an untimely death. Our thoughts are with his family as they come to terms with this horrible news,” said Sheriff Gonzalez on social media, urging the community for prayers and support.

Palmer remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are pleading for public help to find him.
