HMRC Warns of Tax Refund Scam Targeting Social Media Users

HMRC is sounding the alarm as criminals try to steal Government Gateway logins and personal details to run fake Income Tax Self Assessment refund scams. Fraudsters are snapping up identities from across the UK, from teens to pensioners, via social media, promising a “risk-free” cut of the bogus refund.

But handing over your sensitive info is a ticking time bomb. Victims could face tax fraud charges and be forced to repay the full stolen amount.

How the Scam Works

  • Scammers ask for Government Gateway credentials.
  • They also want bank details, passport, driving licence, address, DOB, and National Insurance number.
  • Once armed, they file false Self Assessment refunds and pocket the cash.
  • The real person is left liable for fraudulent claims.

HMRC says always deal directly with them or through your tax advisor for legit refunds.

HMRC Cybercrime Chief Issues Stark Warning

“If something looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is,” said Simon Cubitt, Head of Cybercrime at HMRC.

“People risk blackmail, threats, and further abuse if they get involved. We urge anyone aware of these scams to report them immediately.”

You can report scams online by searching “Report Fraud HMRC” on GOV.UK.

Police Crackdown Underway

Last month, coordinated raids led to arrests of four men aged 16 to 33 in Hertfordshire, Bristol, Derbyshire, and Buckinghamshire. They face charges linked to Self Assessment refund fraud and money laundering. The investigation continues.

HMRC is teaming up with law enforcement and social media companies to smash these scams.

  • Contact your bank immediately if you suspect you’ve shared info with scammers.
  • Report fraud to Action Fraud or police (in Scotland, call 101).

Remember, the last Self Assessment deadline for 2020/21 was 31 January. HMRC granted an extension until 28 February for late filers and customers must pay any tax due or arrange payments by 1 April to avoid penalties.
