British and Bulgarian forces have smashed a huge migrant smuggling ring, seizing hundreds of inflatable boats, engines, and rubber rings aimed at funneling people illegally into Britain. This jaw-dropping haul was uncovered during a ruthless 12-month joint operation targeting migrant smugglers’ vital gear.
Massive Seizure Hits Smugglers’ Millions
The crackdown led to 33 separate interceptions, where officers confiscated 125 inflatable boats, 128 engines, 300 rubber rings, plus more than 700 pumps. Experts say this haul has ripped away a whopping £16.6 million from organised crime gangs making a fortune from dodgy Channel crossings.
Operation Kapitan Andreevo: Targeting Key Smuggling Hub
The joint taskforce took direct action at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing in southern Bulgaria — one of Europe’s busiest and most notorious smuggling routes. Officers conducted targeted searches, snaring more illegal equipment, including ten Chinese-made outboard boat engines hidden in a truck falsely declared as transporting furniture.
Top Officials Praise Cross-Border Teamwork
Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, hailed the operation as a win for Labour’s plan to stamp out illegal migration after ditching the controversial Rwanda scheme. “This work shows what can be achieved through international cooperation to go after the criminal smuggling gangs making millions out of small boat crossings,” she said.
Eagle added that new Border Security Command teams will be deployed across Europe to ramp up pressure on these gangs.
UK and Bulgaria Join Forces Against Migrant Gangs
National Crime Agency (NCA) Director of Intelligence, Adrian Matthews, stressed Bulgaria’s crucial role on the smuggling supply chain. “Taking this gear out before it reaches criminals not only disrupts their deadly operations but saves lives at sea,” he said.
Since late 2023, UK and Bulgarian agencies have boosted ties with multiple agreements to jointly dismantle people-smuggling networks.
Government Vows No Let-Up in Fight
Angela Eagle reaffirmed the Labour government’s vow to protect vulnerable migrants, including women and children, from ruthless traffickers. “Thanks to the NCA, Border Force, and our Bulgarian partners, our borders are tighter, and lives are being saved,” she said.
Seizing this equipment strikes a massive blow to smuggling profits and sends a clear message: the crackdown on these callous criminal gangs will not stop anytime soon.
