Parking chaos as Red Arrows dazzle Cowes – but ticket blitz sparks fury
Families flocked to Cowes to catch the spectacular Red Arrows display marking the close of Cowes Weekend 2018. But while the skies lit up, down on the ground, anger was simmering. Two parking wardens swooped on cars parked near the event, slapping 30 penalty tickets on visitors and locals alike.
Wardens hit the brakes on Red Arrows fans
Isle of Wight Council’s parking enforcers targeted Baring Road, issuing fines to drivers who had parked to watch the aerial show. Many visitors from out of town struggled to find official parking, adding fuel to the fire. One frustrated resident blasted the council: “Where else are people supposed to park? The biggest spots were taken over by the event we all want!”
The outcry is loud. “It’s not the drivers’ fault, it’s the council for not providing enough parking!” several locals complained. Yet others defended the enforcement. “People always moan about parking, then when tickets come, they moan again. You can’t have it both ways.”
Residents call the ticket blitz ‘malicious’
One stunned eyewitness said he didn’t get a ticket himself but watched two wardens handing out fines at 7.15pm just as the show kicked off.
“It took my breath away. Nobody was blocking anyone, just common sense parking,” he said. “The town council invites outsiders to join the fun, then hits them with parking penalties. It’s shooting themselves in the foot.”
He slammed the council’s decision to send two wardens, calling it “malicious”, adding: “Technically they did their job, but morally they were wrong.”
Council under fire – what’s next?
The ticketing has left a nasty taste for many, souring what should have been a night of celebration. We’ve contacted Isle of Wight Council for comment. More updates to follow.
