Kent Police Bust Illegal Tobacco Racket in Margate Shops
£2,000 Worth of Illicit Tobacco Seized
Kent Police, teaming up with Kent County Council’s Trading Standards and other agencies, have cracked down on illegal tobacco sales in Margate. On Wednesday, 29 January 2025, officers inspected 17 shops licensed to sell tobacco and alcohol. They confiscated over £2,000 worth of illegal tobacco products—including cigarettes and vapes—from two premises.
Fight Against Crime and Antisocial Behaviour
The operation targeted organised crime linked to illicit tobacco sales and aimed to curb antisocial behaviour in the area. During the raids, police also arrested a 45-year-old man on Northdown Road who was wanted for recall to prison, marking a significant win for the operation.
Police Warn of Dangers Behind Cheap Tobacco
“Businesses have a responsibility to trade legally when selling tobacco and alcohol,” said Inspector Jim Woodward. “Illegal sales can fuel nuisance behaviour that harms local communities, even if carried out by just a few. The sale of illegal tobacco often supports organised crime. What some see as a bargain can contribute to more serious offences in the area.”
Inspector Woodward confirmed police will keep up their efforts to enforce licensing laws and reduce crime and disorder in Margate’s communities.
