Met Police Sergeant Matt Ratana Killed in Shocking Early Morning Attack
It’s a grim day for the Metropolitan Police as they confirm the death of custody sergeant Matt Ratana, aged 54. The beloved officer was fatally wounded in the early hours, cutting short a distinguished career spanning nearly 30 years.
A Lifetime of Service and Rugby Passion
Matt Ratana joined the Met back in 1991. He was top of his recruit class and served across London, notably in the West End, Westminster, Hackney, and croydon/" title="Croydon" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Croydon. Over the years, he worked with the Territorial Support Group and later in the detention command. His dedication to policing was matched by a love of rugby. Originally from Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, Matt came to London in 1989 after university and played for London Irish. He was a respected player and coach, recently serving at East Grinstead.

Investigation Underway After Arrest of Suspect
A 23-year-old man was arrested nearby for possession of ammunition and class B drugs with intent to supply. The suspect is currently in hospital in critical but stable condition. Homicide detectives are leading the inquiry with support from the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Police are not treating the killing as terror-related and urge the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
