Man Sets Himself on Fire Outside Chislehurst Pub in Shocking Scene
Chaos erupted on Chislehurst High Street on Sunday evening when a man doused himself in petrol and set himself ablaze outside the Queen’s Head pub.
Armed With Petrol, Flames Erupt in Pub Car Park
The desperate man stormed out of the pub following a bust-up with his girlfriend, carrying two petrol cans in his bag. Without warning, he set himself on fire in the car park, sparking panic among shocked onlookers.
Heroic Locals Rush to Rescue
Three regulars at the Queen’s Head leapt into action. They grabbed bottles of water and tore off the man’s burning clothes, preventing what could have been a fatal blaze.
“If it wasn’t for the quick action from three blokes in the pub ripping his burning clothes off and extinguishing him, he would have been dead,” said one witness. “There were two petrol cans in his bag and it started catching flame and I extinguished it, heart was racing.”
Emergency Services Respond, Bus Routes Disrupted
The Metropolitan Police were called to reports of “a man committing self-harm” and launched an immediate investigation. The London Ambulance Service rushed the man to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the incident caused major disruption on local bus routes. Buses on routes 161, 27, and N136 were diverted, missing stops between the War Memorial and Elmstead Lane. Routes 160 and 162 also missed stops between Ashfield Lane and Gordon Arms.
Police continue to investigate the distressing incident.
