Worthing Council Fumes Over Vandalism of Lifesaving Gear at Brooklands Lake

Worthing Council has slammed repeated vandalism and theft of crucial life-saving equipment at Brooklands Lake. Throwlines, vital for water rescues, have been found damaged or stolen, putting visitors’ safety at serious risk.

Vandals Put Lives on the Line and Cost Community Thousands

The council’s parks team revealed that the Brooklands throwlines—key tools for rescuing people struggling in the water—have been tampered with time and again. This reckless destruction not only endangers lives but has also racked up replacement costs nearing £2,000 in just a short time.

Nine Throwlines and Two Life Rings Damaged or Missing

Brooklands Park, alongside other coastal spots, is equipped with nine throwlines and two life rings, strategically positioned to help in emergencies. But vandalism and theft have left much of this vital gear either broken or missing when it’s needed most.

Council Urges Public to Report Suspects to Sussex Police

Worthing Council is calling on the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to Sussex Police. Routine checks are carried out by the Coastal Office team and the parks team at Brooklands to keep lifesaving equipment in working order.

If you spot anyone damaging or stealing life-saving equipment, call 999 immediately. You can also report damage to Worthing Council’s environmental services.
