Human Remains Found in South London Confirmed as Missing Woman
Human remains discovered in a south London river on Tuesday have been confirmed as those of Sarah Mayhew, 38, who went missing in March. Two people are in custody, charged with her murder and dismemberment.
Torso Found During Repairs
Contractors working on Rawnsley Avenue in Mitcham uncovered a torso at 2:18pm, prompting the Metropolitan Police to launch an investigation. The remains were found nearly nine miles from other body parts discovered earlier, confirming Sarah’s death.
Sarah Mayhew, from Croydon, was last seen on the evening of March 8 in Sutton, southwest London. Partial remains were first found last month in Rowdown Fields, New Addington.
Two Charged Over Murder and Burial Offences
Gemma Watts, 48, and Steven Sansom, 44, have been charged with Sarah’s murder and preventing her lawful burial. Both remain in custody as inquiries continue.
Gruesome Details of the Crime
Detective Inspector Thorpe confirmed the investigation revealed Sarah was allegedly killed at a residential property. Her body was dismembered using power tools before being dumped in separate locations.
Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the crime.
Public Appeal and Additional Charges
A dog walker first raised the alarm after their dog uncovered a human bone. DNA confirmed the remains belonged to Sarah Mayhew. Police urge anyone with information to call 101, quoting reference 1656/02Apr.
Steven Sansom also faces three charges relating to making indecent images of a child, adding to his serious legal troubles.
The ongoing investigation continues as police work to bring justice and closure to this tragic case.
