Human Remains Found in South London Confirmed as Missing Woman Sarah Mayhew
Human remains discovered in a South London river on Tuesday have been confirmed as missing woman Sarah Mayhew, 38. Two suspects are in custody, charged with her murder and dismemberment.
Gruesome Discovery Alongside the River
Metropolitan Police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham, at 2:18pm after contractors uncovered a torso during repair work. This was about nine miles from where other parts of Sarah’s body were found earlier.
Sarah, from Croydon, was last seen on the night of March 8 in Sutton, southwest London. Partial remains were first discovered last month in Rowdown Fields, New Addington, confirming her death.
Two Arrested and Charged
- Gemma Watts, 48, and Steven Sansom, 44, have been charged with Sarah Mayhew’s murder and preventing lawful burial.
- Sansom, of Burnell Road, Sutton, also faces three separate counts of possessing indecent images of a child.
Investigation Uncovers Chilling Details
Detective Inspector Thorpe revealed police believe Sarah was killed at a residential property before being dismembered with power tools. Officers are still working at the scene and continue their investigation.
The exact cause of Sarah’s death has not yet been disclosed. Authorities say no further suspects are being sought at this time.
Public Plea for Information
A dog walker initially alerted police after their pet uncovered a human bone. DNA tests confirmed the remains as Sarah’s. Police urge anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference 1656/02Apr.
