Massive London Police Crackdown: Over 425 Arrested by Nightfall
The Metropolitan Police launched a huge operation on Saturday, arresting more than 425 people by 9pm amid widescale protests shaking the capital. Officers poured into London’s streets to tackle unrest and maintain order as tensions boiled over.
Most Arrests Linked to Terrorism Charges
The Met revealed that the majority of those detained face allegations under the Terrorism Act, accused of supporting a banned organisation. Alongside this, more than 25 suspects were arrested for assaulting police and other public order offences.
Some protesters turned violent, reportedly punching, kicking, spitting at officers, and throwing objects, pushing the situation to boiling point.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Claire Smart leading the operation said, “Around 2,500 officers were deployed across London to manage the scenes.”
Clashes, Massive Marches, and Policing Challenges
While a peaceful 20,000-strong march by the England Palestine Coalition went ahead with very few arrests, chaos was stirred up by the “Defend Our Juries” protest. This demonstration aimed to “overwhelm the justice system,” forcing police to divert significant resources to control the unrest.
The Met confirmed there’s still “ample custody capacity,” with detainees being processed at temporary holding hubs in Westminster.
