Major Blaze Erupts at Maida Vale Electrical Substation

London woke to chaos this morning as a massive fire ripped through an electrical substation in Maida Vale, near Paddington. The London Fire Brigade declared a major incident and scrambled 15 fire engines and over 100 firefighters to battle the towering inferno.

Flames shot up to 70 feet, sending thick black smoke billowing across central London. The blaze broke out around 5.30 AM at the substation on Victoria Passage, Aberdeen Place, sparking panic and 73 emergency calls to the Brigade’s control room.

Residents Evacuated Amid Explosions and Smoke

Local residents described terrifying scenes of loud explosions waking them before urgent evacuation orders forced them from their homes.

“People were banging on our flat door shouting ‘fire, fire’ and telling us to run,” said one stunned resident. “It was terrifying. I feared the worst. I just grabbed my shoes and ran.”

Firefighters Warn: Stay Indoors, Keep Windows Shut

Station Commander Paul Morgan, leading the response, said: “This is a very visible fire and there is lots of smoke. Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid inhaling smoke.”

Specialist bulk foam units and a turntable ladder are being deployed, but crews cannot fully attack the blaze until power to the substation is cut. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

Possible Telecoms Impact as Fire Rages

Early reports suggest the substation may serve telecom infrastructure, though it doesn’t power London’s transport network. The cause remains unknown. An investigation will start once the fire is contained.

Authorities urged the public to avoid Maida Vale and Paddington to keep the way clear for emergency services. Dramatic photos and videos show smoke plumes stretching as far as SW7 and Westminster.

Londoners are urged to stay alert and keep away from affected areas. We’ll bring you updates as this story develops.
