Man Arrested After Fatal Faversham Fire Kills Beloved Busker

A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a devastating blaze that claimed the life of James Ronayne, the well-loved Faversham busker known as “Punky Jim.” The fire ripped through a 23-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO) on Salters Lane, opposite Faversham Town Football Club, in the early hours of August 10.

Tragic Blaze Destroys Home and Claims Busker’s Life

James, 44, had lived on the top floor of the house for four years. The fire started just before 12:30 a.m., engulfing the building. While all other residents escaped, they were left homeless and lost nearly everything. Family Calls for E-Scooter Ban After Deadly Fire

“He was always happy, always up for a joke, and saw the good in everyone,” said James’s younger brother Brandon Ronayne. “E-scooters are a ticking time bomb. Having one isn’t fair on others living nearby — it put everyone’s health and lives at risk.” Brandon is urging for a ban on e-scooters and e-bikes in all residential homes.

Residents Displaced, Grieving and Seeking Justice

The fire required 10 fire engines, a command unit, a height vehicle, and a rescue team to tackle the blaze. Former housemate Craig Parrott, 42, now displaced and staying in temporary accommodation, described the shock of losing his home and precious belongings made by his children.

“When I first saw the fire, I thought it was a bonfire. Then I realised it was our home. Words can’t describe the shock,” he said.

The Faversham community mourns the loss of Punky Jim, whose music and spirit touched many lives. Police investigations continue as authorities seek justice for James Ronayne and those affected by the tragedy.
