Man, 38, Busted for Selling Illegal Streaming Service in Wolverhampton Raid
Wolverhampton Crackdown Shuts Down Rogue Streaming Operation
Police swooped in the early hours of 15 October 2024, arresting a 38-year-old man suspected of peddling illegal streaming packages from his home in Wolverhampton. The City of London Police’s specialist unit, PIPCU, led the targeted operation.
Officers seized a key server during raids on four business premises across Wolverhampton and Coventry, effectively pulling the plug on the unauthorised Sky channel access service. The man faces charges linked to copyright infringement and money laundering.
Illegal Streaming Fuels Crime and Puts Users at Risk
BeStreamWise warns that one in three UK illegal streamers or their contacts suffer fraud or identity theft. Detective Constable Daryl Fryatt of PIPCU blasted the booming dark market:
“Illegal streaming is a huge issue for the entertainment and creative industries. While it may seem like a low-risk, high-reward crime, the proceeds often fund serious crime. Plus, users risk data theft, fraud, and malware.”
He added: “The message is clear: if you sell illegal streaming services, you will be caught and held accountable.”
£9 Billion Hit to UK Economy and 80,000 Jobs Lost Annually
The Intellectual Property Office reveals piracy drains a staggering £9 billion from the UK economy every year, wiping out around 80,000 jobs in the process.
Matt Hibbert, Sky’s Anti-Piracy Director, urged caution:
“When people illegally stream, they’re handing over personal information to criminals. The risks are very real. We applaud PIPCU’s action and will keep fighting to protect our content and keep viewers safe.”
Suspect Released Under Investigation as Probe Continues
West Midlands Police joined PIPCU in the crackdown. The accused has been released under investigation while inquiries carry on. Authorities warn anyone involved in illegal streaming rings to expect swift justice.
