Knife-wielding man tasered and arrested in Ryde
Armed cops swooped on a man carrying a carving knife in Ryde last night. The Joint Armed Roads Policing unit struck just before 9pm after a member of the public raised the alarm.
Concerned eyewitness spots knife
A local called police after spotting the man walking the streets with a large blade. Thinking quickly, officers triggered a linked alarm to flush him out.
High-stakes chase ends on Melville Street
Unbeknown to cops, the alarm was connected to a monitoring company which passed the call to emergency services. Police launched a search and found the suspect inside a Melville Street building.
Taser used to bring man down
Officers confronted the man, deploying a taser to safely subdue him. Paramedics checked him over and removed the taser barbs.
A second arrest was later made at a nearby property, believed to be a woman. Both suspects remain in custody at Newport Police Station as investigations continue.
