Man, 63, Dies After High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Croydon Crash

A 63-year-old man has tragically died following a high-speed police pursuit that culminated in a serious multi-car crash in Croydon on Friday evening.

Police Chase Sparks Smash on South Norwood High Street

At around 8.28pm on 18 April, Metropolitan Police in Croydon spotted a vehicle with suspected cloned number plates. The car refused to stop at 8.38pm near South Norwood High Street, triggering a tense chase through the borough.

Just eight minutes later, at 8.46pm, the pursued vehicle slammed into two others near the junction of Wickham Road and Shirley Road. Emergency services rushed to the scene immediately.

Deadly Crash: Driver Dies; Passengers Arrested

Despite police performing CPR and swift paramedic treatment, the 63-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Two 61-year-old male passengers were arrested. One faces charges for being in a stolen vehicle and possession of Class A drugs. Both remain in police custody.

Six Injured, IOPC Launches Probe

Six members of the public, occupants of the other two vehicles, were hurt and rushed to hospital. One suffers potentially life-threatening injuries.

Road closures and bus diversions caused chaos but have now been lifted following several hours of investigation. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the death linked to the police chase. An independent investigation is underway.

Police urge witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact the Metropolitan Police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
