A huge blaze tore through a residential block on Thornham Street, Greenwich, today (Thursday, August 17), sending thick smoke billowing across the area. Firefighters raced to the scene, deploying six engines and around 40 crew members to tackle the inferno.
Smoke Inhalation Victims Treated on Site
The fire broke out at 2:46pm, sparking a rapid emergency response. Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service medics. Despite the scary situation, no serious injuries were reported.
“Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to a fire on Thornham Street in Greenwich. Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation,” confirmed a London Fire Brigade spokesperson. “We received over 20 calls reporting the fire.”
Police Close Roads As Firefighters Battle Blaze
Fire teams from Greenwich, East Greenwich, and Lewisham stations joined forces to douse the flames quickly. The Metropolitan Police assisted with road closures, keeping the public safe while the fire was brought under control.
Authorities stressed the cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution during the emergency.
