Massive Cocaine Haul Hidden in Cargo Ship Hull at Melbourne Port
Australian authorities have pulled off a major drug bust, seizing over 200 kilograms of cocaine stashed inside the hull of a cargo ship docked at Melbourne’s Port. The haul, worth a staggering $80 million on the streets, has sparked a full-scale investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Border Force (ABF).
Underwater Robot Uncovers Huge Hidden Stash
The operation kicked off on August 9, 2023, when ABF officers used a high-tech underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to search the vessel at Melbourne’s Maribyrnong Terminal. The ship had arrived from Argentina, via New Zealand. The ROV uncovered the massive cocaine shipment expertly concealed within the ship’s hull.
Officials Hit Back: Drug Smugglers Won’t Win
AFP Commander Richard Chin slammed the smugglers’ long-used tactics. “This seizure proves law enforcement is staying one step ahead of criminals bringing harmful drugs into our communities,” he said. Chin added the bust prevented about one million street deals, stopping serious harm before it could hit the streets.
“Our investigation continues to hunt down the organised crime groups behind this brazen attempt,” Chin revealed.
Drug Gangs Target Aussie Ports, Authorities Warn
Though the ship and crew were allowed to continue to Western Australia and South Australia, officials are on high alert. ABF Commander Clinton Sims warned criminal gangs keep trying to sneak drugs using clever methods like hull attachments.
Victoria Police Search and Rescue Inspector James Dalton stressed the authorities’ resolve: “If you’re trying to smuggle drugs into Victoria by ship, we will find you and hold you accountable.”
Public Urged to Come Forward with Info
The AFP is calling on anyone with information about suspicious activity at the Port of Maribyrnong around August 9, or at Fremantle or Adelaide ports the following week, to speak up. Tips can be given anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or online at crimestoppers.com.au.
