Met Police: Fake Sadiq Khan Audio Clips No Crime
Deepfake Audios Rock Remembrance Weekend
The Met Police have ruled that the AI-generated audio clips falsely depicting Mayor of London Sadiq Khan dismissing Remembrance Day don’t break the law. The fake recordings, which went viral online, especially on TikTok, were quickly debunked after investigation.
What’s In The Clips?
- One clip features a fabricated Khan voice slamming the Remembrance weekend.
- Another has the Mayor questioning why Armistice Day ceremonies coincide with a Palestinian march through London.
The Met confirmed they reviewed the clips but decided no criminal offence was committed. But they warned they’ll keep a sharp eye on online content and act if future posts cross the line.
Sadiq Khan Hits Back On Social Media
Mayor Khan slammed the deepfakes as a sinister attempt to divide London’s communities. On X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“While I hosted an interfaith Remembrance event with our armed forces at City Hall, the far-right were sharing deepfake audio about me. They may have new means, but their ends are the same – to divide our diverse communities. We must stand together – it’s what London does best.”
The Deepfake Danger
This episode shines a light on the rising threat of deepfake technology spreading misinformation. It’s a wake-up call to stay vigilant and question what we hear in the digital age of slick, manipulated content.
