Wiltshire Police Crack Down on Dangerous Driving in Project EDWARD Push
Wiltshire Police are hitting the county’s most dangerous roads hard this week (14-18 September) as part of Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death). The national campaign aims to slash road fatalities with tough enforcement and education.
Targeting the Fatal Four: Speed, Phones, Seatbelts, and Drink Driving
Officers from the Roads Policing Team are running daily operations focusing on notorious trouble spots. Their mission? Tackling the fatal four killers behind most serious crashes:
- Speeding
- Using a mobile phone while driving
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Drink and drug driving
Today, they zeroed in on the A303, Wiltshire’s deadliest road this year. In just a two-hour morning window, they arrested a 40-year-old man suspected of drug-driving and possessing cannabis. He’s now released under investigation.
Meanwhile, 10 speeding tickets flew out the window – including one shocker at 110mph. Two drivers got caught using mobiles behind the wheel, and two vehicles were seized for unlicensed driving. Several other motorists were coached on safe driving and vehicle upkeep.
Road Safety Boss Issues Stark Warning
“We’re backing Project EDWARD with a mix of enforcement and education,” said Acting PS Ben Cox of the Roads Policing Unit. “We patrol daily, but this week shines a spotlight on the fatal four dangers that cause too many tragedies. These reckless behaviours increase the chances of life-changing accidents—for victims and their loved ones. By cracking down on hotspots, we aim to make Wiltshire’s roads safer and save lives.”
National Campaign Goes Virtual
The nationwide Project EDWARD campaign also features a virtual road-trip, connecting road safety experts and organisations. This Friday (18/09), the tour stops at FleetCheck’s headquarters to explore how fleet management software can reduce road risk.
Wiltshire Police’s tough stance this week sends a clear message: drive safe or pay the price.
