New Law Demands Valproate Drugs Dispensed Only in Original Packs from October 11
Full Packs Only to Boost Safety Warnings
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced a major change: from Wednesday, October 11, 2023, valproate-containing medicines must be dispensed in the manufacturer’s original full pack. No more bagged or split packs.
This move comes after a government consultation aimed at making sure patients always get crucial safety warnings. These include pictograms, patient cards, and the Patient Information Leaflet—all packed with the original box.
Government Backing After Strong Support
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) ran the consultation, which revealed huge public backing. A whopping 85% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that dispensing valproate in full packs ensures patients receive vital safety info.
Dr June Raine, MHRA Chief Executive, stressed the life-saving importance of clear, up-to-date warnings. She warned patients: don’t stop taking valproate without advice but raise any concerns with your healthcare provider.
Why The Crackdown on Valproate?
- Valproate poses serious risks of birth defects and developmental disorders when taken during pregnancy.
- Women of childbearing age must adhere to the Valproate Pregnancy Prevention Programme when prescribed this drug.
- The new full-pack rule helps guarantee patients understand these critical risks.
Pharmacists Given Some Leeway—but No Cutting Corners
Pharmacists can round prescribed amounts up or down so patients get only whole packs. Importantly, these drugs cannot be repackaged into plain dispensary bags.
Exceptions are rare and require a documented risk assessment—like when using monitored dosage systems. In these cases, pharmacists must still provide the Patient Information Leaflet and clearly explain why the original pack isn’t supplied.
Maria Caulfield, Minister for Public Health, urged dispensers to familiarise themselves with the new rules, reflecting the government’s drive to protect patients and support families impacted by valproate harms.
