£5.8m Makeover Set to Revive Newhaven Fort
Newhaven Fort is gearing up for a massive £5.8 million facelift, kicking off after this summer. This historic landmark’s facelift aims to boost facilities and safeguard its rich past for future visitors.
Major Work to Close Fort in 2024
Funding from the Newhaven Town Deal will fuel the restoration starting late 2023 and rolling on through 2024. To meet tight government deadlines, the fort will shut its gates for the duration of the work, reopening by spring 2025—possibly even earlier.
Exciting Upgrades and History on Display
- Improved access to gun emplacements
- Revamped exhibitions highlighting D-Day, the home front, and barrack rooms
- Redeveloped adventure playground
- New visitor experience at the battery observation post
- Restoration of the Romney Hut
Restoration to Fix Weather Damage and Modernise
The upgrade isn’t just cosmetic. Structural repairs will tackle water damage with brick repointing, window fixes, and fresh visitor toilets. Electrical systems and power supplies will also get a much-needed overhaul.

Councillor Johnny Denis, Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture, Tourism & Leisure, praised Newhaven Fort as “a special place” for locals. He’s “excited” for the grand re-opening that will let everyone enjoy this iconic site for generations.
