Kent Police Crack Down on Labour Exploitation at Car Washes and Farms
Kent Police’s Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking team launched a major swoop last week, targeting car washes, mini-markets, and fruit-picking sites suspected of labour abuse. From 14 to 18 September 2020, officers teamed up with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), Border Force, and other agencies to root out exploitation.
No Criminals Nabbed but Workers Offered Support
Visits covered hotspots in Ashford, Canterbury, Chatham, Faversham, Gravesend, and Sittingbourne. While no offences were detected, officers spoke directly to numerous workers, handing out crucial info on how to access support if needed. The operation focused on prevention and raising awareness.
Illegal Cockle-Pickers Warned at Sheerness Beaches
Special attention was given to former cockle-picking sites in Sheerness where illegal activity was suspected. GLAA officers found a group of cockle-pickers and warned them off acting as unlicensed gangmasters. They also emphasised the health risks of shellfish unfit for human consumption.
The Kent and Essex Inshore and Conservation Authority (KEICA) seized 20kg of shellfish to protect public safety.
Officers Urge Workers and Public to Stay Vigilant
“Tackling modern slavery and human trafficking is a shared responsibility,” said Detective Sergeant Stacey Chapman. “No one working in the UK should feel trapped or abused. We want people to have the confidence to report wrongdoing.”
“Most businesses look after their staff well, but we won’t be complacent. We will keep visiting places at risk to ensure workers know the support available,” Chapman added.
GLAA Senior Investigating Officer Jennifer Baines stressed the power of partnerships: “Working closely with Kent Police is vital to protect vulnerable workers and expose exploitation.
“Hand car washes and farms are especially vulnerable to abuse, so these operations are crucial. We encourage the public to spot signs of labour exploitation and report their concerns. Remember the human cost behind the services you use.”
