Peaceful Protest in Southport Erupts into Violence Near Mosque
A calm demonstration in Southport spiralled into chaos last night when a large group, believed linked to the Anti-Muslim mob, clashed violently with police outside a mosque on St Luke’s Road.
Police Attack Sparked by Object-Throwing Protesters
The trouble kicked off around 7:45pm as protesters hurled bottles and wheelie bins at the mosque. Police moved in to control the situation but faced fierce hostility. Officers suffered injuries, and several police vehicles were damaged amid the rampage.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said, “What began as a peaceful protest quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. Our officers faced significant hostility from the crowd. Several officers have sustained injuries, and multiple police vehicles have been damaged.”
Reinforcements were rushed to the scene to prevent further violence. Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the area while order is restored.
Eyewitnesses Describe Chaotic, Frightening Scene
Locals described the unrest as terrifying. One resident said, “It was meant to be peaceful, but it quickly got out of hand. The police tried their best, but the protesters were extremely aggressive.”
The mosque targeted in the initial attack reported no injuries. Mosque leaders called for calm and advised their community to stay indoors until the situation settles.
Community Leaders Condemn Violence as Investigation Underway
Southport MP Patrick Hurley slammed the disorder. “There is no place for such actions in our community. We must all stand together against hate and keep Southport safe for everyone,” he said.
Police are now hunting those responsible and appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage to assist their probe.
The violent outbreak comes just after a tragic stabbing in Southport, leaving the town tense. Authorities and local leaders urge unity and resilience as they work to calm the situation.
