Kent Cops Join Forces to Protect Wildlife on the Coast
Kent Police’s Rural Task Force is teaming up with the Coastguard and the RSPB to crack down on wildlife disturbance along the county’s stunning coastline. They’re urgent: boaters and jet ski riders must respect protected species or face consequences.
Respect the Coast, Keep Your Distance
Sergeant Darren Walshaw warned, “Kent’s shoreline is home to rare birds and marine mammals. We want everyone to enjoy the coast — but without harming the animals or their habitats.”
“The key advice? Keep your distance. Seabirds are easily spooked, so if you get close, quietly move away,” he added.
Slow Down or Face the Law
- Boats and jet skis must maintain a no-wake speed under 5mph near cliffs.
- If you spot groups of birds on the water, reduce speed and steer around them.
Remember, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it a criminal offence to kill, injure, or remove protected wild animals. So play it safe, or risk hefty fines and prosecution.
