Crime Wave Hits Barnham: Police Clamp Down
Sussex Police are cracking down hard on a spike in crime and anti-social behaviour in Barnham. Working with local partners, they’re stepping up patrols and community action to restore safety.
Shoplifting and Violence Surge
In just three months—from October 2023 to January 2024—police logged 52 reports of anti-social behaviour and 15 violent crimes in Barnham and nearby Eastergate. Among these were five assaults without injury. But the biggest headache is shoplifting, with a staggering 64 incidents reported during the same timeframe.
Multi-Agency Team Up
To tackle these worrying trends, Sussex Police joined forces with Arun District Council, British Transport Police, local supermarkets Co-op and Tesco, Southern Rail, and others. They met at Barnham Village Hall on February 20 to plot a tough new strategy.
One key spark for action was a burglary at the Co-op in The Square on February 11. After a media appeal, police identified a suspect and investigations continue.
Youth Under Scrutiny & Rail Security Boost
Recently, several youths were interviewed under caution over 123 shoplifting counts. Meanwhile, Barnham train station has stepped up security with rail enforcement officers on duty six nights a week to stamp out crime.
“Community support is vital in reporting offences so we can act swiftly and effectively,” said Detective Sergeant Lou Baileff.
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne added: “Public reporting and police action go hand in hand. We’re especially concerned about the rise in shoplifting and remain committed to protecting local businesses and staff.”
