Gatwick Fraud Alert: Man Targets Passengers for Cash
Police at Gatwick Airport are on the hunt for passengers across UK airports who have been approached by a scammer asking for cash to fund his “journey home.”
Man Arrested After Multiple Reports
On 10 September, officers arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of fraud by false representation. The arrest followed complaints of passengers in Gatwick’s North Terminal being asked for small amounts of money.
The Story Behind the Scam
A similar incident was reported on 31 August. A passenger handed over £20 to a white man in his forties claiming to be a polyglot language teacher, freshly arrived from Germany and desperate for bus fare to the North of England.
Police Appeal for More Victims to Speak Up
After questioning, the suspect was released on bail until 8 October as enquiries continue.
PC Roxanne Carpenter of Sussex Police said: “We are asking anyone who has been approached at a UK airport in a similar way recently to get in touch with us.”
“You can report online or call 101 Sussex, quoting serial 749 of 31/08.”
