Vandals Target Life-Saving Defibrillators at Welsh Stations

Defibrillators, crucial devices that deliver a life-saving electric shock to people suffering cardiac arrest, have been repeatedly damaged or stolen across Transport for Wales stations. In just nine months, seven such incidents have been reported at locations including Pencoed, Ninian Park, Briton Ferry, Sarn, Llandeilio, and Llandudno.

Patrols and Cameras Deployed to Catch Offenders

Transport for Wales and British Transport Police have launched patrols and installed CCTV to nab vandals and thieves. The defibrillators are now locked in secure cabinets to stop further theft or damage.

Time Is Critical in Cardiac Arrest Cases

  • Wales sees around 2,800 cardiac arrests outside hospitals annually.
  • Only 1 in 20 survive without immediate help.
  • Every minute without CPR or defibrillation slashes survival chances by 10%.
  • Immediate defibrillation can more than double survival odds.

Officials Shocked as Lives Are Put at Risk

“Lives are being put at risk by people who steal and vandalise defibrillators,” said British Transport Police Inspector Richard Powell. “Offenders should think how they would feel if their loved ones needed this equipment and it was out of order.”

Karl Gilmore, Rail Infrastructure Director for Transport for Wales, slammed the vandals: “It’s deeply disappointing that these life-saving devices were targeted weeks after installation. Cardiac arrest can strike anyone, and these defibs are vital for survival.”

Tomos Hughes from the Welsh Ambulance Service urged community responsibility: “If you’re that vandal, imagine it was your family member who needed that defibrillator. Don’t be the reason someone dies.”

Adam Fletcher, Head of British Heart Foundation Cymru, warned, “Access to a defibrillator can mean the difference between life and death. Vandalising these devices puts lives at real risk.”

If you see suspicious behaviour around stations, text details to 61016 or contact British Transport Police immediately. In emergencies, always dial 999.
