Shock thefts target elderly shoppers in Mansfield town centre

Two brazen thefts have rattled Mansfield’s Stockwell Gate area, with vulnerable victims robbed shortly after visiting their banks.

Cash snatched from octogenarian shopper

Just before 12.30pm on Monday 20 March, a woman in her eighties was walking around a shop when thieves struck. They made off with several hundred pounds in cash.

Envelope stolen after following sixties woman into shop

Ten days later, shortly before 2pm on Thursday 30 March, a woman in her sixties was followed into a shop. A suspect grabbed an envelope from her handbag but fled when challenged.

Police release suspect images and issue warning

Nottinghamshire Police have now released two photos of a person they want to question over the offences. Officers are urging shoppers to stay alert, especially if anyone is following them or hanging uncomfortably close.

“These were upsetting offences for the victims and we are determined to catch up with the person or people responsible,” said PC Kev Marshall.

“We are maintaining a strong uniformed and plain-clothed presence in the town centre to reduce thefts.”
