Two Teens Nabbed After Hammer Assault in Twickenham

Two youths on a moped attacked a uniformed police officer with a hammer before speeding off — but police caught up with them in Twickenham.

Officers were called to an underpass near Jubilee Avenue, Whitton, TW2, at 3:30pm on Monday, 20 May, after reports of suspicious moped riders. Police arrived and spotted the suspects, but when the riders saw them, they tried to make a run for it.

Two officers quickly blocked their escape. That’s when one of the teens wielded a hammer and smashed the officer over the head, causing cuts and bruising. The pair then fled on their moped.

  • Suspects aged 16 and 18 arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and theft of a vehicle.
  • Taken to south London police station for questioning.
  • Injured officer remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Police Praise Courage as Investigation Continues

“These attending officers were brave and resilient in their efforts to stop these suspects. Even when presented with a dangerous weapon they acted in the best traditions of the Met and stood their ground,” said Chief Superintendent Sally Benatar. “Their determination led to these armed suspects being arrested. I am very proud of them.”

“We all wish the injured officer a speedy recovery and appeal for anyone who saw the suspects behaving suspiciously around the Jubilee Avenue underpass or High Street, Whitton area to come forward.”
