New Forensic Push to Solve Tragic 1995 Arson Killing
South Wales Police have reignited the hunt for justice in a devastating house fire that killed Diane Jones, 21, and her two young daughters, Shauna Hibberd, 2, and baby Sarah-Jane Hibberd, just 13 months old.
The blaze tore through their Merthyr Tydfil home on the Gurnos estate on October 11, 1995. Investigators confirmed the fire was deliberately set using an accelerant poured through the letterbox of their three-bedroom end-terrace house.
Hope Rekindled by Modern Forensics
More than 30 years later, the Major Crime Review Unit is reopening the case. They’re banking on cutting-edge forensic technology to finally catch the ruthless arsonist behind this heartbreaking tragedy.
All three victims were found in an upstairs bedroom and died from their injuries. Police are asking anyone with new information—even if they’ve never spoken before—to come forward.
Family’s Heartbreaking Plea for Justice
“On October 11, 1995, my heart, my life got shattered into a million pieces,” said Mary, Diane’s sister. “It has been 30 years but as a family we are still living this nightmare as if it only happened yesterday.
“We didn’t just lose a sister and our nieces, we also lost our parents. My father took his own life in 2003, unable to live without them. My mother fought tirelessly for justice before she sadly passed away.
“I’m hoping someone out there holds the key to what happened. Please do the right thing and come forward so my sister can finally rest with her babies.
“As a family, we will never stop fighting for justice. My parents didn’t get to see it, but I hope I will—for them.”
