Tragic Crash Claims Life of Red Arrows Engineer Corporal Jonathan Bayliss

Corporal Jonathan Bayliss died when the Hawk T1 jet he was in crashed at RAF Valley around 1.30pm on Tuesday, 20 March 2018. A police probe and full military inquiry are underway, with no speculation being made about the cause at this stage.

Beloved Team Leader and Engineer

Sergeant Will Allen, head of the Red Arrows’ travelling engineers known as the Circus, described Jon as a natural motivator and inspiration to everyone, whatever their role or rank. “Jon’s beaming smile and dry sense of humour could lift any dull moment,” Allen said.

Selected for the elite Circus team in 2018, Jon had achieved a childhood dream by flying in a Red Arrows jet. He was known for his generosity, kindness, and tireless work ethic. “Many would call him a genuine grafter,” Allen added.

The Red Arrows Family Mourns

Squadron Leader Richard Bland praised Jon as a top bloke with an infectious grin and a sharp wit that could fill a room with laughter. “He was the ultimate professional and a true inspiration, selflessly leading his team,” Bland said.

Wing Commander Andrew Keith paid tribute to Jon’s skill and dedication, highlighting his major role in ensuring the jets performed stunning displays worldwide.

“He was a popular colleague and a rock for many, deeply missed by the Red Arrows family,” Keith stated.

RAF Leaders and Defence Secretary Send Condolences

Air Vice-Marshal Warren James offered heartfelt condolences to Jon’s family. “This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks RAF crews face every day,” he said.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson called Jon a “skilled engineer and shining example of British Armed Forces values,” sending prayers to his family and loved ones.

  • Born in Dartford, Kent, and raised in Hartley
  • Educated at Axton Chase School and West Kent College; earned an HND in engineering management from University of Greenwich
  • Joined the RAF in 2001 after working at Brands Hatch motor racing circuit
  • Served at RAF Coltishall and RAF Coningsby and on overseas operations
  • Joined Red Arrows in January 2016; supported tours across Far East, Middle East, Europe
  • Led Red Arrows’ smoke dye team in 2017; selected for elite Circus engineers in 2018
