Rescue Spaniel Frank Sniffs Out Crime as Wiltshire’s Newest Drug Detection Dog!

From Rescue Pup to Police Prodigy

Frank, a lively two-year-old Cocker Spaniel, swapped shelter life for crime-fighting fame after being adopted from Dogs Trust Canterbury in March 2025. Originally handed in due to family health issues, Frank quickly caught the eye of staff for his “crime-fighting potential.” Now, he’s a fully qualified specialist in spotting drugs, cash, and firearms for Wiltshire Police.

Frank’s First Big Bust

Frank’s nose has already paid off. During a recent county lines drug raid in Swindon, he sniffed out a large stash of hidden cash tucked under pillows. This find proved Frank’s sharp detection skills and cemented his role as a crime-busting canine hero.

PC Craig Head, Frank’s handler: “Frank is a joy to work with. He’s affectionate, loves his searches, and has adapted brilliantly to police life—especially when there’s a ball reward waiting!”

Championing Rescue Dogs in Policing

Frank is the second dog from Dogs Trust to join Wiltshire Police since the force signed up for the Animal Welfare Visitors Scheme (AWS). This UK-wide programme ensures top-notch care and ethical treatment of police dogs. Since 2002, AWS has supported 32 police forces, helping find and train dogs like Frank for vital specialist roles.

Louise Crawford, AWS Coordinator at Dogs Trust: “Frank’s journey shows how rescue dogs can be stars on the frontline. We’re thrilled he’s thriving with Wiltshire Police and making a real difference fighting crime.”
