Rogue Trader Busted Targeting Pensioner in Maidstone
Kent Police have arrested a man suspected of scamming a pensioner out of thousands in Maidstone. The 48-year-old from Canterbury was hauled in following a tip-off about a rogue trader cheating a man in his 60s.
Pensioner Duped into Paying Thousands
The pensioner paid a hefty sum in cash for building work on his home. But the nightmare worsened when the fraudster demanded more money, asking the victim to withdraw cash from his bank. Alarmed, the victim alerted police on Saturday 11 August 2018.
Police Nab Suspect in Plain Clothes Sting
Plain clothed officers swooped on the address to investigate. They quickly arrested the man on suspicion of fraud. He was later bailed to return to the police station on 14 August.
Warning: Don’t Fall for Rogue Traders
Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur, Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, warned:
“Avoid tradespeople who cold-call unexpectedly offering repairs. If in doubt, ask them to leave and come back when you can have someone with you.
Always get a written quote or a second opinion from recognised firms before any work starts.
Never pay upfront or withdraw cash to pay traders who knock on your door. Anyone pestering you should be told you’ll contact Trading Standards and police.”
How to Protect Yourself from Rogue Traders
- Don’t answer unexpected offers of work at your home.
- Only use tradespeople you trust and who come recommended.
- Get multiple quotes before agreeing to any work.
- Pay only after work is completed – never in advance.
- Report suspicious callers to Trading Standards or the police immediately.
Kent Police continue their investigation to crack down on rogue traders targeting vulnerable locals.
