Couple Arrested in Brighton Amid Search for Their Missing Baby
Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were spotted in Stanmer Villas, Brighton, just before 9.30pm on Monday, February 27. A member of the public alerted Sussex Police, who quickly swooped in and arrested the pair. They remain in custody.
Urgent Search Launched for Newborn Baby
The Metropolitan Police have launched a desperate hunt to find the couple’s baby, who has not had any medical care since being born in early January. Authorities are concerned for the infant’s wellbeing.
Trail of Taxi Rides and Disappearances
- The couple’s car caught fire on the M61 near Bolton on January 5, forcing them to take taxis across the UK.
- Since then, they moved from Bolton to Liverpool, then Harwich in Essex, East London, and finally Newhaven in Sussex.
- They were last seen near the Newhaven ferry terminal on January 8 and later in Brighton.
Police say the couple had been living rough in a blue tent, avoiding capture by constantly moving and hiding their faces from CCTV cameras.
From Aristocracy to Fugitive Life
Constance Marten, 35, hails from a wealthy aristocratic family and was once a promising drama student. She met Mark Gordon, 48, in 2016. Since then, the pair have lived in near-total secrecy. In September last year, when Marten was heavily pregnant, they began hopping between rented apartments.
It’s unclear if their baby was born full-term or if there are any health complications. Police urge anyone with information on the missing infant to call 999 immediately.
