Sussex Cop Under Fire: Misconduct Probe Launched Over Use of Force
IOPC Steps In After Brighton Arrest Row
A Sussex Police officer is now under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over his use of force during an arrest in Brighton on July 7. Officers were trying to find a missing teenager when the drama unfolded.
The probe zeroes in on the moments before a widely shared clip showing restraint on the ground. The video, which exploded on social media, only captures part of the incident — but the IOPC have reviewed full body-worn footage and witness reports.
Evidence Triggers Full Misconduct Inquiry
Sussex Police passed the case to the IOPC after bodycam footage raised concerns about the officer’s actions prior to the widely seen restraint. The professional standards department concluded the earlier interaction warranted closer scrutiny.
IOPC Regional Director Sarah Green confirmed:
“Having examined a range of evidence including body worn video and witness statements, we have taken the decision that this is now an investigation for misconduct. An investigation does not mean that misconduct proceedings will necessarily follow.”
Arrest Details: Man Held Over Threats as Tensions Flared
The arrested man, 28, was suspected of making threats to cause criminal damage. Following his arrest, officers had to use further restraint. However, the misconduct investigation targets the force used before the footage circulating online began.
As the probe continues, all eyes remain on Sussex Police to see what comes next in this unfolding case.
