Ten Hurt in Fiery Attack
Ten people were left in agony after a homemade “chilli spray” was unleashed inside the Costco store in Avonmouth, Bristol. Emergency crews scrambled to the scene just after 6:30pm on 17 February when shoppers complained of stinging eyes and burning skin.
A teenage suspect has been arrested on suspicion of attempting grievous bodily harm and administering a noxious substance. All those affected, including the suspect, were treated on-site and later released.
Store Lockdown Sparks Terror Fears
Witnesses described a frantic lockdown as police, fire, and ambulance teams swarmed Costco. One shopper told Facebook:
“The police were treating it as a terrorist attack. I and 100+ people got locked in and weren’t allowed out whilst they looked into it.”
The incident caused chaos inside the store as officials launched a full investigation.
What Was in the Spray?
Emergency responders identified the liquid as a homemade chilli spray without any strong acid or alkaline chemicals. Despite its rudimentary nature, the spray caused painful reactions among victims.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
The juvenile suspect remains in custody while police continue probing the incident. A spokesperson said:
“Police, fire, and ambulance crews attended in a coordinated multi-agency response. The incident concluded by about 8:30 pm, and police resources cleared the scene by 9 pm.”
