Armed Forces Champion Darren Andrews Scoops Top Honour
Darren Andrews, a dedicated officer with Hampshire Constabulary, has been making waves for his tireless work supporting ex-military personnel and staff with Armed Forces connections. After 13 years in the Grenadier Guards and 18 years with Hampshire police, Darren took on the role of Service Champion in May 2021 — and he’s been going all out to improve lives ever since.
From Tattoos to Trust: How Darren Makes a Difference
Based at Southampton Custody, Darren offers vital advice and support to anyone with an armed forces background. Whether it’s helping arrested individuals get the care they need or guiding colleagues with military family ties, he’s become a lifeline. “I’ve sat with people in custody who spot my military tattoos, which sparks conversations and trust,” Darren explains.
He’s also built strong networks with local councils and organisations, steering people to the right help to get their lives back on track. Even internal support is on Darren’s radar – he assists colleagues in syncing leave with their military partners returning from deployment.
Championing the Cause Across Hampshire
Darren’s efforts have sparked a wider movement. To date, 42 Hampshire Constabulary staff have trained as Service Champions, spreading support county-wide. All individuals with military ties are logged to ensure tailored care and help.
His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. Earlier this month at Brighton’s Armed Forces Network’s “Together We Can Make a Difference” conference, Darren was honoured as Armed Forces Champion 2022. The award was presented by Andrew Blackman, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex.
“It was completely unexpected to receive the award,” Darren said. “I was surprised when I was called the week before and told that I was going to receive it. I’ve been really pushing the Armed Forces Champion role over the last 18 months, and I’ve had a lot of help and support from people to do so.”
Driving Change for Armed Forces Communities
Darren is hailed as a key driver behind Hampshire Constabulary’s growing commitment to Armed Forces support. His advocacy for more officers to become Service Champions raises awareness and ensures help is always on hand for both personnel and the public with military links.
“Darren has been a driving force in moving this work forward within Hampshire Constabulary, and we are grateful for his support and active engagement,” his citation states.
Thanks to champions like Darren Andrews, Hampshire’s police force is leading the way in backing those who’ve served — on and off the beat.
