Meet Mo Robinson, the Northern Irish lorry driver at the heart of a grim tragedy after 39 people were found dead in the refrigerated trailer of his truck in Essex. The 25-year-old, who reportedly nicknamed his rig “the polar express,” was arrested following the horrific discovery by an ambulance crew early Wednesday morning.
39 Lives Lost in Essex Lorry Horror
Emergency services were called to Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, Essex, just before 1:40am on Wednesday 23 October 2019. Inside the refrigerated container of Robinson’s lorry, they discovered 39 people dead — 38 adults and one teenager. Despite swift medical response, all were pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver Held on Suspicion of Murder
Robinson was taken into custody in Grays on suspicion of murder. The investigation is now one of the largest murder probes in UK history. Police believe the lorry, registered in Bulgaria, entered the UK via Holyhead on Saturday 19 October. Authorities are working closely with international partners.
Police Speak Out on Tragedy
“This is a tragic incident where a large number of people have lost their lives. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened,” said Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner.
“We are in the process of identifying the victims, though this may take some time. We’ve arrested the driver whose vehicle is at the centre of this investigation. We appreciate the disruption caused to local businesses and are working to minimise it while continuing our work with Thurrock Council.”
Area Remains on Lockdown
A heavy police cordon remains in place, with access to and from Waterglade Industrial Park shut down as investigations continue. The devastating discovery has sent shockwaves across the nation, raising urgent questions about migrant trafficking and safety on UK roads.
