The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the probe into the shocking stabbing of Southend West MP Sir David Amess. They’re working hand-in-hand with Eastern Region Specialist Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon has confirmed the attack is now officially being treated as an act of terrorism.
Islamist Extremism Suspected
The early investigation suggests the motive may be linked to Islamist extremism. Essex Police rushed to an address on Eastwood Road North just after midday on Friday, 15 October, after reports of a stabbing.
Tragic Scene at Eastwood Road
- Officers found a man suffering multiple stab wounds.
- Emergency services gave immediate medical aid, but sadly he died at the scene.
- The victim has been identified as Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West.

25-Year-Old Arrested, Solo Suspect
A 25-year-old British man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently held in custody at an Essex police station. Searches are underway at two London addresses linked to the suspect. Police believe he acted alone and are not looking for anyone else at this stage.
