Prime Suspect in Suzy Lamplugh Murder on Deathbed
John Cannan, 68, the prime suspect in the 1986 disappearance and murder of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, is now on his deathbed in prison. He is receiving end-of-life palliative care at Full Sutton prison in East Yorkshire.
Family Hopes Cannan Will Finally Spill the Truth
Suzy’s family, whose loved one’s body has never been found, are desperate for answers. Suzy vanished in Fulham, West London, after meeting a mysterious “Mr Kipper” to show him around a house. Her white Ford Fiesta was found abandoned nearby — the doors unlocked, purse inside, and handbrake off.
Her brother Richard urged Cannan to come clean. He told the Mirror, “I would like Cannan, if he knows, to tell us what happened to Suze. It would mean a great deal to the family.”
Cannan’s Dark Past and Ongoing Suspicion
- Cannan is serving life for the 1987 abduction and murder of Shirley Banks, receiving three life sentences.
- He has always denied any role in Suzy’s disappearance, which police officially linked to him in 2002.
- The CPS said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him over Suzy’s case.
- Police have dug at multiple sites linked to Cannan—including his mother’s former home and other locations—as they continue the search for Suzy’s remains.
- In 2019, Cannan told the Sunday Mirror, “I had no involvement in Suzy Lamplugh’s disappearance,” expressing concern the police were using Suzy’s case against him to block parole.
- He suffers from paralysis and uses a wheelchair due to a stroke.
Investigators Remain Cautious
Retired Detective Superintendent Jim Dickie, who spent six years on the investigation, warned: “He’s a master manipulator who should not be trusted.”
With Cannan’s health failing, the pressure is on for him to reveal the truth before it’s too late. Suzy’s family wants closure—and a chance to lay her to rest properly.
