Smith, caught up in the controversy, has rejected a personal apology from police officers. Furious, he’s now gearing up for legal action after no charges were filed against him.
Police Chief Slams New Law as ‘Poorly Defined’
Ex-police boss Sir Peter Fahy slammed the new protest law as “poorly defined and far too broad.” He warned MPs that frontline officers are struggling to enforce rules passed just days ago. Speaking on the Today programme, he said:
“We see the consequences of that, particularly for the poor police officers who have to make sense of legislation that was only passed a few days ago.”
Labour Calls for Review, Stops Short of Repeal
Shadow Housing Minister Lisa Nandy admitted the handling of Smith’s case “clearly went wrong.” She backed Mayor Sadiq Khan’s call for a review but stressed Labour won’t push for a complete scrapping of the new law. The controversial Tory crackdown has sparked outrage for limiting peaceful protest rights.
