Helicopter Airborne to Fight Surrey Wildfire

An Airbourne Solutions Eurocopter AS350 made multiple water-dumping runs yesterday from Frensham Pond to Hankley Common. The daring aerial efforts aim to snuff out the spreading blaze that has raged for four days straight.

50 Hectares Burn but No Buildings Lost

So far, about 50 hectares have been scorched by the fire near the Ministry of Defence training area in Surrey. Thankfully, no homes or MoD properties have been damaged. On Tuesday, evacuated residents were allowed back home as fire crews pushed hard to contain the flames.

Emergency Services Join Forces in Battle

  • Surrey Fire and Rescue is leading the charge, backed by Waverley Police, Ministry of Defence Police, and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.
  • This marks Surrey’s first coordinated helicopter water-bombing operation to fight a wildfire.

This additional effort by ourselves, the Ministry of Defence, and Surrey Police should help us put a stop to this wildfire,” said Acting Chief Fire Officer Dan Quin. “I’m extremely proud of all crews working in tough weather conditions. Special thanks to residents, local farmers, and Hankley Common Golf Club for their support.”

Road Closures Lifted, But Caution Remains

Inspector Sam Adcock of Waverley Police praised the “aerial firefighting exercises” and thanked locals for their patience as several road closures were enforced but have now been lifted.

“Surrey Fire and Rescue have been tireless in keeping us safe. We continue supporting efforts to contain the fire,” he said.

The public is still advised to steer clear of Hankley Common while firefighters battle the blaze.
