Thieves Swipe Priceless Bronze Crucifix from Newcastle Church
Heartless robbers have stolen a six-foot bronze crucifix from All Saints Church in Gosforth, Newcastle. The theft was discovered at around 9am on Thursday after the sculpture vanished overnight.
£20,000 Bronze Jesus Taken from Sacred Memorial
The striking bronze crucifix, featuring a bronzed Jesus Christ, was installed in the church’s garden of remembrance in 1965. It stands in a consecrated area where many ashes of loved ones are scattered. Valued at up to £20,000, the statue was crafted by renowned artist Frank Roper, who created works for churches nationwide before his death in 2005.
Church and Congregation Devastated by Callous Theft
The Reverend Canon Andrew Shipton expressed deep sorrow over the loss: “It was a great shock to find that the bronze statue of our Lord had gone and a cause of considerable sadness.” He urged the thieves to reconsider, reminding them that reputable scrap dealers will not accept the crucifix.
“There is no value in keeping the crucifix and the pain and anguish you have caused should not be underestimated,” said the church spokesperson.
