Isle of Wight NHS Trust Hits Back at GMB Union Bullying Claims
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has fired back after the GMB union Southern Region raised bullying concerns. Julie Pennycook, the Trust’s Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, has spoken out.
Union Access but No Interference with Care
Pennycook said the Trust provides facilities to recognised unions and professional bodies to hold meetings and negotiate terms. “We support awareness activities around Trust buildings and help unions communicate with their members,” she said. “It’s crucial staff are properly represented and that their reps get full support.”
But she warned union activities can’t disrupt patient care. The Trust must respond when staff raise concerns.
GMB’s Push Sparks Staff Complaints
Last week, three GMB regional organisers entered St Mary’s Hospital handing out leaflets and a survey. Staff complained about the “assertive” approach while they were caring for patients. When asked to change tactics by hospital security, the GMB representatives refused.
“At the staff’s request, security had to involve Hampshire Police to intervene,” Pennycook revealed.
Trust Seeks Cooperation, Not Conflict
Pennycook emphasised that the Trust does not want a hostile relationship with the GMB. “We encourage the union to build a good working relationship with other recognised unions and professional bodies.”
She added: “We’re committed to changing the culture, stamping out bullying, and creating an environment where staff feel safe to speak up.”
Meanwhile, the GMB has yet to formally request recognition by the Trust or disclose how many staff they represent, Pennycook confirmed.
