Two Arrested as Protests Ignite Outside London Hotels Housing Asylum Seekers
Tensions Flare in Canary Wharf and Islington
Chaos erupted outside hotels in Canary Wharf and Islington hosting asylum seekers, as protests spiralled out of control. Police swooped and arrested two people, including a member of a counter-protest group who refused to remove a face covering as ordered.
Face Coverings Spark Arrest
The arrests were made under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. This law allows police to demand removal of face coverings if they suspect it will help prevent crime or antisocial behaviour. One protester was detained specifically for failing to comply with this rule.
“Some protesters in Canary Wharf arrived wearing face coverings. To prevent clashes like those seen in recent demonstrations across the capital, police took action,” said officers on the scene.
What Is Section 60AA?
Section 60AA grants police temporary powers to order people to reveal their faces if serious violence is expected or if disguises are being used to intimidate or hide identities. This includes face masks, hoods, and scarves.
Police confirmed that updates will follow as the situation develops.
